Early Years and Education

Prof. Dipankar Bhattacharya was born to Smt. Snigdha and Sri Gouriprasad Bhattacharya on 29th May 1959 in Maldah, West Bengal.  Prof. Bhattacharya completed his B. Sc.(1979) and  M. Sc (1981) in Physics from Jadavpur University, Calcutta. He acquired his Ph. D. (Physics) from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1988.

Career

Prof. Bhattacharya  started his career as scientist in 1987 at Raman Research Institute. He did his Post-Doctoral Fellow from Centre for High Energy Astrophysics and University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands during  Oct. 1989 - Sept. 1991.  He was a visiting member, Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara, U.S.A. from Jan. 1991 - June 1991. In the year 2007 he moved to IUCAA, Pune  to take up a new assignment as Professor.

Scientific Work

Prof. Bhattacharya worked primarily in the area of High Energy Astrophysics.  His specific interests included the evolution of magnetic fields of neutron stars, origin and evolution of millisecond pulsars and their gamma ray emission, evolution of supernova remnants containing pulsars and the afterglows of gamma ray bursts.  Along with his students, he is at present investigating the distortion of neutron star magnetic fields caused by accretion, the spreading of matter on the surface, and the use of cyclotron lines as a probe of these processes.

Fellowship

Prof. Bhattacharya is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences (Council Member 2007 - 2010) and the National Academy of Sciences, India.
