Dr Y M Patil

Dr Yalagouda M Patil (1st March 1948), A well known Library & Information Scientist retired from Raman Research Institute as a Librarian in February 2010.

Early Years and Education

Dr Patil was born on 1st March 1948 at Hirebagewadi Dist. Belgaum, in an agricultural family. His parents are Sri M.B.Patil and Smt. Sangavva Patil. He had primary and secondary schooling in the native place, completed PUC from Dharwad and acquired B.Sc degree in Physics from Karnataka Univesity, Dharwad in 1970. He Obtained B.L.I.Sc from Karnataka University, Dharwad in 1972; Associateship in Documentation and Reprography from INSDOC (now NISCAIR), a CSIR lab during 1975-76 and Ph.D. in Agricultural Librarianship in 1996 from Nagpur University, Nagpur. Dr Patil attended Advanced International Training course on “Information on Agriculture” at Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux International (CABI)(Sept.1989), Wallingford, UK and In-house Training programme at National Resource Institute, Chatham, UK (Oct. – Dec.1989).


Dr Patil started his career as Library Assistant (In-charge Library) at Radio Astronomy Centre, TIFR, Udacamandalum(Ooty),Tamil Nadu in 1972. He joined, Library and Documentation Unit, National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, ICAR, Nagpur in 1979 as Documentation Officer & Officer-in-Charge. In June 2000 he moved to Raman Research Institute as Librarian. He retired from RRI in 2010.

Scientific Work

Dr Patil was responsible for developing a small technical library at Radio Astronomy Centre, TIFR, Udhakamadalam. He brought out information services in the form of Current Awareness Service in the fields of Pulsars, Galactic and Extragalactic Radio Sources and Cosmology. A Computerized Serials Holding List was prepared and updated every year by him. He established Library and Documentation Unit at National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, ICAR, Nagpur. Current awareness bulletin and bibliographic database for soil survey were his contributions. Patil was providing AGRIS inputs on soil science literature published in the AGRIS Processing Centre of FAO. At Raman Research Institute Library, which was well established, he had the task of strengthening with better infrasturcture and smooth running of the library. Library was computerized using LIBSYS software under his guidance. Implementing RRI Digital repository is another mile stone in his career. He was nominated as the coordinator for FORSA Consortia and he also played a key role in National Knowledge Resource, NKRC (Formerly known as CSIR-DST) Consortia. He was expert consultant while establishing libraries at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research and National Institute of Advanced Studies.


Dr Patil is the life member of Indian Library Association, New Delh; Association of Agricultural Librarians and Documentalists of India, New Delhi; Karnataka State Library Association, Bangalore. He is also member of Special Library Association (SLA), Baltimore, USA. He was country representative for ASIA chapter of SLA.


Hobbies of Dr. Patil are reading, listening to music, watching TV, involving in social activities.
