LAXPC Data Reduction Guideline@RRIPOC

Users may read the LAXPC data format and detailes of LAXPCs before they start procesing LAXPC data. However, this is not esential.

A brief description of event mode data:

Most users will use data in the event mode (modeEA) of LAXPC in which the time, anode ID and Pulse Height (PHA) information for each event are recorded. For X-ray photons of energy greater than 34 keV, LAXPCs may produce two simultaneous pulses (due to emission of Xenon fluorescence photons, which may get absorbed and produce a second pulse in a different location of the same detector) and these are recorded as double events with different anode IDs and separate PHA values. The light curve and spectra can therefore be extracted for the single events, double events (PHA added), and all events (PHA added for the double events). Light curves and spectra from each anode (or certain combinations of anodes) can be extracted for a range of the PHA value. Each LAXPC detector has 7 anodes in 5 layers (2+2+1+1+1 from the top).

Note that the parameter files for LAXPC data reduction tools and Heasoft should be be kept in the same directory (see the environment variable PFILES and have all parameter files copied to this location) to avoid any conflict while accessing both LAXPC tools and the FTOOLs.
