About

The Ultrafast and Nonlinear Optics (UNO) lab headed by Reji Philip is now working in the following areas: (i) Optical nonlinearity in novel materials: A large number of nonlinear absorbers have been studied for their saturable absorption and reverse saturable absorption properties with potential applications in laser pulse generation, optical power limiting and optical diode action. (ii) Generation and characterization of laser-produced plasmas: Plasmas have been generated from solid targets and thin films using powerful nanosecond and femtosecond laser pulses and their spectroscopic and electrical properties are investigated using the techniques of optical time of flight (OTOF), optical emission spectroscopy (OES), time-resolved imaging and ion dynamics. (iii) Surface nanostructuring using ultrafast lasers: Ultrafast laser pulses are used to create nanostructures on solid surfaces, and the optical, chemical, and morphological changes are studied. Durable super-hydrophilic silicon and fused silica surfaces, silicon micro-needles etc have been fabricated.
