Abstract:  Trapped ion systems provide an excellent platform for studying interactions with co-trapped atoms, precision spectroscopy, quantum computation, Coulomb crystals, and thermodynamics of small systems due to control over the preparation of the initial state and long decoherence time. To cover the class of experiments mentioned above, we need to develop an ion trap that can be further integrated into different setups according to requirements. My thesis work covers the design, development and characterisation of an end-cap type Paul trap that is ideal for precision spectroscopy, Coulomb crystals in 3-dimensions, and thermodynamics of small systems and can be used for studying the interaction of single ion with co-trapped atoms in the long run. In the first part, I will present the numerical study of the effect of trap geometries on the secular energy of the ion-atom system after collision. In the second part, I will talk about the design, material selection, assembly, characterisation of the trap assembly, the initial results on Coulomb crystal morphologies in the 3D Paul trap, and the lifetime measurement of the metastable state.
