Neutrons in Biology

The neutron was discovered in 1932 by James Chadwick. In 1935, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. Importantly, the discovery of the neutron ushered the nuclear age and neutron scattering. During the course of the talk, I will present a short historical description of the neutron, and then go on to describe -- in conjunction with isotopic labeling -- its use in studies of model and functional biological systems.
Short Biography
Prof. John Katsaras received his PhD in Biophysics from the the University of Guelph and was a Principal Scientist at Chalk River Laboratories until 2010. Currently, he is Distinguished R&D staff at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Starting in 2020, John and his collaborators have been using lipid bilayers as potential neuromorphic platforms for understanding the molecular basis of biological learning and memory.
