Do supernovae indicate an accelerating Universe?

I will explain how deflagration supernovae have been used to infer that the Hubble expansion rate is presently accelerating. I will demonstrate that the inferred acceleration is anisotropic, hence cannot be due to a Cosmological Constant. It is likely an artefact of inhomogeneity due to structure formation, in particular due to our being situated in an anomalously deep local ‘bulk flow’.
Short Biography
Subir Sarkar obtained his PhD (1982) at TIFR. Since 1990 he has been at the University of Oxford, where he was Head of the Particle Theory Group, and is now Emeritus Professor. His interests lie at the interface of fundamental physics with astrophysics and cosmology - dark matter, dark energy, inflation and the cosmic microwave background, etc. He also works on high energy cosmic messengers, and belong to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the Cherenkov Telescope Array collaborations. In 2017 he was awarded the IUPAP-TIFR Homi Bhabha prize for “distinguished contributions in the field of high energy cosmic ray physics and astro-particle physics over an extended academic career.”
