Probing the progenitor environments of FRBs

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are luminous dispersed pulses of extragalactic origin. They were first discovered serendipitously in the archival data from the Murriyang radio telescope. To date, more than 600 FRBs have been published, and a broad distinction has emerged in the population of these sources. Some sources have been seen to be repeating, while others have not. However, even with a relatively large sample set of both repeating and non-repeating sources, there is still an unclear understanding of the emission mechanism physics, progenitor environment, and circumburst environment of FRBs.
In this talk, I will discuss my work on understanding the circumburst medium of these elusive sources using spectro-polarimetric and temporal behaviour, and our current understanding of the dichotomy in the source population based on the progenitor environment. I will focus on using the spectro-polarimetric properties (e.g., plasma lensing effects, depolarisation behviour, circular polarisation) of these sources as probes to understand their circumburst media and derive inferences on the complex magneto-ionic environment of FRB progenitors. Our findings demonstrate the importance of burst environments in modulating the spectral characteristics. Using these probes, I will conclude on our current advancements in understanding the progenitor environments of FRBs.
