Condmat for dummies- Lecture 1: free fermions and fractional quantum Hall effect
Speaker: Adhip Agarwala (IIT Kanpur)
Usual cond-mat graduate school teaches us tight-binding models and second-quantized operators for non-interacting fermions etc; and then the language makes a discontinuous jump to functional forms of many-body wavefunctions as soon as we need to learn fractional quantum Hall effect. In these pedagogical lectures, I will try to review the basics of one-dimensional tight-binding model and fractional quantum Hall effect and try to make connections between the two languages; In a round-about way, I will try to show how an exactly solvable model where free fermionic system looks like that of a composite fermion sea. In the process, we will see some connections between the phenomena of Hilbert space fragmentation and fractonic systems. None of the material presented is new or original, but in the spirit of cond-mat for dummies series - it will be vague enough for people to get confused, to debate and discuss.
