Advancing the Predictive Understanding of Extreme Monsoon Precipitation over the Himalayan Region in a Warming World
Speaker: Dr. R. Krishnan (Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology ( IITM), Pune)
Human-induced climate change has warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land, and is already affecting every region of Earth in multiple ways; and the recent climatic changes are widespread, rapid and intensifying, and unprecedented in thousands of years (IPCC AR6, 2021). Climate change is already affecting every inhabited region across the globe with human influence contributing to many observed changes in weather and climate extremes, and larger projected changes in the frequency and intensity of extremes with every additional increment of global warming. This talk will discuss the consequences of climate change on weather extremes, monsoon rainfall and associated disasters over the Indian subcontinent, particularly focusing on the Himalayan region, and highlight the importance of satellite, remote-sensing and insitu observations; and weather / climate models for advancing our predictive understanding of the regional monsoon precipitation extremes in a warming world.
