The Institute, founded in 1948 by Sir C. V. Raman, is an autonomous research institution engaged in research in basic sciences and receives grant in aid from the Government of India, Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology. The main objective of the Institute is to carry out research in basic sciences in the areas of Theoretical Physics, Soft Condensed Matter, Astronomy & Astrophysics, and Light & Matter Physics.

As per the Regulations of the Institute, the Council of the Institute is the executive body of the Institute. The Director of the Institute is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the Institute and the Director is responsible for the administration of the Institute. The Administrative Officer of the Institute shall be responsible for the general administration and maintenance of the Institute, upkeep and maintenance of the premises and properties of the Institute. The Administrative Officer shall work under the direction of the Director.

Procedure followed in decision making process [Section 4(1)(b)(iii)]
The functioning of the Institute has been, and will continue to be, governed by the policy laid by the Council and the RRI Trust. One of the tenets laid down is that the Institute shall continue to carry out quality science in its chosen areas of activity. In doing so, it shall continue to reorient its available resources with emphasis on continued cooperation and collaboration with other major scientific institutions within and outside the Country. RIGHT TO INFORMATION
The procedure for requesting for any information that is eligible to be disclosed by the Institute under and subject to the Right to Information Act is as below:
A request for obtaining information shall be accompanied by an application – in a plain paper containing the salient information required to be provided under the Right to Information Act, or in the prescribed format as laid down by the Rules of the Act – along with a fee of Rs.10/- by way of a demand draft or bankers’ cheque drawn in favour of ‘Raman Research Institute’ or a cash receipt acknowledging receipt by the Accounts Section of the Institute.
Scientific information available on the scientific work carried out by the Institute, its publications and other information available in the library of the Institute shall be given free access for reading during the working hours of the Institute: 09:00a.m. to 01.00p.m., and 01.30p.m to 05.30p.m. Monday to Friday excepting on official holidays. The number of applicants who shall be permitted to avail this facility shall be two at a time, and applications for such information access shall be decided on first cum first served basis. If any photocopying is required to be provided, Rs.1 per page will be charged. Such copying shall be subject to the provisions laid down from time to time by the relevant intellectual property rights – like Trade Marks, Copy Right and Patents Act, etc.
The Institute shall provide information available with it, and on which it has authority to part with, under the authority of the Director of the Institute, and these include records, documents, memos, advices, press releases, circulars, orders, log books, contracts, reports, scientific and technical papers (subject to Intellectual Property Rights), samples, models, data, etc., excepting those documents, information, data which the Institute obtains from agencies, individuals from within and outside the Institute, experts, for obtaining which it was required to assure that the information so obtained shall be produced and used by the concerned authorities for discharging their duties, and/or to arrive at appropriate decisions, etc., and that form of data, information in any form which the Institute is contractually bound to use only for those purposes such information, data was obtained. However, the final decisions / resolutions so arrived at shall be provided against applications received under the Act.
