Abstract
Recent progress in our understanding of entangled quantum phases leads to an interesting connection between symmetry-protected topological phases (SPT) and topologically ordered phases (TOP) via the concept of gauging global symmetries. I will give an example of this by obtaining a description of a chiral spin liquid (a TOP) via gauging the global U(1) symmetry of a bosonic integer quantum hall phase (a SPT). The resultant phase has emergent gauge fluctuations whose low-energy description can be obtained using hydrodynamic descriptions that take into account the quantum anomaly via specific boundary conditions.
