Abstract
In this seminar, I will present the Kitaev model defined on a square lattice for discrete groups. This model provides a remarkable example of a lattice gauge theory whose physical features are governed by the rich mathematical structure of its algebra of observables, known as the quantum double model. I will discuss how the interplay between its mathematical framework and spectral properties gives rise to anyonic excitations and topological order, enabling robust schemes for topological quantum computation and quantum error correction.
