Quantum description of reality is fine-tuned

Abstract

No fine tuning for a theory demands that the properties, which hold empirically, should also retain at the level of reality. In this talk, we will address the question: Is it possible to have no fine-tuned realist explanation for the distinguishability of quantum systems? This question is interconnected with another fundamental issue of whether the quantum state carries only epistemic information about the physical systems or is a part of the realist description of physical systems. We will derive a condition on the empirical probabilities as a consequence of 'no fine tuning for distinguishability' and point out that even two-dimensional quantum systems violate that condition. We will discuss the significance of such violations. Finally, we show how this phenomenon can be used in privacy-preserving quantum communication with a simple example.

Short Biography
Dr. Debashis Saha completed the integrated BS-MS from IISER Kolkata in 2014 and moved to Poland for his Ph.D. studies. He defended his Ph.D. thesis in Dec 2018 from 'National Centre for Quantum Information,' University of Gdansk. He has post-doctoral experience of three years and ten months. He did his first post-doc at 'Center for Theoretical Physics' in Warsaw from Aug 2018 to Dec 2020, followed by the second at S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata from March 2021 to July 2022 as a National Post-doctoral fellow. After that, he joined IISER TVM as an assistant professor in August 2022 and has been working there since then. He works on the theoretical aspects of quantum foundations, quantum information, and the interface of these two areas.
