Abstract

It is often challenging to find the relationships between structure, dynamics, and interaction (force fields) for (a) disordered glassy systems (arguably one of the most intriguing states of condensed matter) and (b) driven materials or active systems far from equilibrium. I will describe tracking the structural transition in a polymer glass during tensile deformation by probing segmental dynamics using rotational fluorescence correlation microscopy. Subsequently, I will present our approach to probe and correlate structure, dynamics, and interaction forces for a monolayer of living tissue using traction force microscopy and boundary stress microscopy in two dimensions. Further, I will show how dynamics and force fields control the energy injection in living active systems that result in topological patterns in the structure. I will highlight pertinent questions and applications that span from biophysics to material science, along with future research directions.
