SATELLITE-BASED SECURE QUANTUM COMMUNICATION IN INDIA

Abstract

Satellite-based quantum communications, including quantum key distribution (QKD), are among the most promising methods for achieving global-scale quantum communication. To assess the feasibility of transmitting quantum signals through the atmosphere, atmospheric simulations were conducted for both uplink and downlink quantum channels. Simulations accounted for the atmospheric conditions across various geographic regions in India, and a detailed link budget analysis was performed for three renowned observatories: IAO Hanle, ARIES Nainital, and Mount Abu and the corresponding key rates are found out. The results showed that quantum bit error rates (QBER) below the threshold required for information-theoretic security.

Next plan to implement adaptive optics (AO) to stabilize and correct wavefront distortions in real time, ensuring quantum signals retain coherence during transmission. AO will be critical in improving the precision of polarization-based QKD experiments, particularly in dynamic atmospheric conditions. By using AO, I aim to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio, thereby reducing QBER and increasing secure key rates in satellite-based QKD systems. This advancement will strengthen the robustness of India’s quantum communication infrastructure and enhance secure satellite-ground quantum communications
