Abstract

Symmetry is a timeless, transcultural ideal, evident in nature’s spheres, rainbows, and life forms, as well as in human art and cognition. Its universality suggests deep biological roots, with balance and harmony embedded in our mental frameworks. Ancient myths, dharma, and Kant’s ethics expanded symmetry into moral and aesthetic realms, while science later revealed its physical foundations. Einstein’s 1905 paper rederived Maxwell’s equations using symmetry, resolving inconsistencies in electromagnetism. Emmy Noether proved that conservation laws arise from symmetries, a revelation extending to gauge symmetry and charge conservation. 

Yet symmetry’s perfection also breeds diversity through broken symmetries, enriching aesthetics—like the dynamic carvings on temples contrasting their sanctum’s perfect form. Thermodynamics, art, and emotion all play with asymmetry, but their meaning depends on the underlying symmetry. Thus, symmetry is both a guiding principle and a canvas for complexity, shaping the universe’s order and its beautiful imperfections.

Short Biography
Prof. Vinod Gaur is an Earth System Physicist working as an Emeritus scientist at the CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute . Most of his work relates to quantifying earth system parameters using Inverse Problem Theory. His current explorations in which he engages with scientists around the country, are: i) How do thermodynamically open, subsystem boundaries communicate to each other, specifically in the deep earth boundary layers, ii) How may one model and test the thermodynamics of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (a wobbling Taurus almost tied at one end), responsible for most of the Monsoon rainfall, iii) Learning how to humanize AI with reason and thermodynamic imperatives.
